Alongside the Malacca Straits, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of Guinea has become one of the world's most notorious sea passages. Not a single month passes without an attempted act of piracy, in particular on cargo ships. What role should port authorities play in terms of securing the approaches to their ports and how can they collaborate with partners from other countries and alliances in securing international waters that guarantee safe passage for vessels calling at their ports ?
